History of the Society In 1989 a small group of people interested in the GANN surname met in Johnson City, Tennessee, to explore their common interest. Many of the early GANN Families settled in the Johnson City Area. This group decided to form an association which would nurture their interest in family history, and promote the exchange of genealogical information. They named the association The GANN Family Historical Society. This organization grew, and their purposes and objectives expanded to include that of the discovery, preservation and perpetuation of the histories and traditions of not only their ancestors but also of their communities. In 1996, in order to provide a greater service to their communities, the members of this group formed a non-profit corporation, THE GANN HISTORICAL SOCIETY & LIBRARY, INC. (GHS&L, INC.). The GHS&L, INC. is a tax exempt non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting an interest in family and community history through its programs of education, preservation, and exchange. Annual Gatherings are held each year in June and are open to members, and all persons interested in history and genealogy. These national gatherings feature lectures, workshops and seminars on the sources and methods of research, and various aspects of genealogy. Family history is important to the Society, and the repository, for this history collected by the Society, is the Mid-Continent Public Library in Independence, Missouri. This collection, called "The GANN Collection", contains copies of family histories, vital documents, photographs, genealogy materials, news clippings and other items collected by members. The Society has member researchers with additional information on Gann family lines in European countries. In addition to its contributions to the GANN Collection, the Society has contributed a large number of volumes of resource books to the Mid-Continent Genealogical Department. The Society publishes an award winning quarterly newsletter, the Gann Gazette. The Gazette contains articles and news stories on real people and events, queries, and other articles to help you in your genealogical research. A limited number of back issues of the Gazette are still available. The GHS&L, INC. maintains a database of over 47,000 names. Variations in spelling of the Gann surname are found such as Gann, Gan, Ghan, Gano, Gant. Thousands of other surnames are included in the database. The information in the database is entered from family trees that are submitted by persons who are willing to share their heritage. We invite you to contact Randy Gann for more information on searching for your ancestors.
